PORT ORCHARD BUTOKUKAN:
BUTOKUKAN AFFIRMATIONS
Butokukan Vows changed to Butokukan Affirmations.*
We have had many students and parents, who were uncomfortable with the Butokukan vows.
The word "vow" was taken to be as a solemn oath before God. Butokukan has no intention
to be a religious organization or to interfere with a student's personal beliefs.
The Butokukan Board of Directors have changed the Vows to Affirmations. We feel that the
Affirmations said once each class session will still have the same affect as the Vows,
without the religious conflict.
The Affirmations are to create a strong allegiance of each member to Butokukan, respect in the
style of Butokukan, and dedication to the practice, and honor among members.
All Butokukan members of Ni-Kumi and higher will be required to know the Affirmations by
heart and live by them.
~Shihon Hill
